I would like to take a moment to offer my condolences to families, friends of Adam Yauch “MCA” of The Beastie Boys, and Maurice Sendak, author/illustrator of children’s literature.

Adam Yauchmusician, rapper, activist, and film director. He was best known as a founding member of hip hop trio the Beastie Boys, which was formed in 1979 in New York City. He was frequently known by his stage name, MCA, and sometimes worked under the pseudonym Nathanial Hörnblowér.

Yauch founded Oscilloscope Laboratories, an independent film production and distribution company based in New York City. A Buddhist, he was involved in the Tibetan independence movement and organized the Tibetan Freedom Concert.

Fresh Air Remembers Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch

Excerpt – With his raspy voice, Yauch started making music with Michael Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) when they were all teenagers in New York City in the early 1980s. The Beastie Boys started out as a punk band, but in 1987, the group released Licensed to Ill, the first hop-hop album to reach No. 1 on the pop charts.

Maurice Sendak, American writer and illustrator of children’s literature. He was best known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963.

Dubbed by one critic “the Picasso of children’s literature” and once addressed by former President Bill Clinton as “the King of Dreams.”
